With online shopping fast becoming one of our favourite ways to shop. Some studies have predicted disaster on the high streets, with many local businesses expected to suffer, as more customers choose to buy online from big name brands.

But one website has found a way to use the internet revolution to boost independent retailers in Edinburgh. By providing gift vouchers for a network of local retailers, beating back the high street giants and making room in the market for unique local businesses.

By providing gift vouchers to use in independent shops in Edinburgh, shoppers have an alternative to chain store shopping vouchers. Love from Indie Street has created a ‘virtual high street’ of the most loved and well-known businesses in Edinburgh. Allowing users to shop like a local, browsing some of the city’s best home grown stores to find personal and original gifts.

With over 65 independent retailers to choose from, including florists, restaurants, fashion boutiques and hair salons, Love from Indie Street has proven to be a great way for local retailers to protect their independent businesses while adapting to the changing nature of retail. Many stores have gained new customers, despite facing heavy competition from big name online brands, as Love from Indie Street provides a way to connect local businesses with new shoppers who would never normally have found them in person.

Marlene Oates, from Melbourne, Australia, praised the uniqueness of her shopping experience on Love from Indie Street's Facebook page, stating: “I absolutely love that I can buy presents for my friends and family in Edinburgh from a range of independent stores from overseas easily... It’s so much more personalised than gift vouchers from the huge chain stores!”

Love from Indie Street’s creator, Rebecca Christensen, said she wanted to combine shopping local with the new, convenient ways many people now prefer to shop: “I wanted to reflect the old style vintage high street with a modern twist,” She added that: “We believe that location shouldn’t be restrictive and that everyone should be able to give their friends and family a meaningful, personal and original gift purchased from a local and much-loved independent business.” The concept is now being rolled out across Scotland.
