Council bosses are preparing to launch an overhaul of business rates to help struggling Perth city centre stores.

Perth and Kinross Council is drawing up a new strategy which could offer much-needed relief to high street traders.

The local authority is being urged to use the recently passed Community Empowerment Act which gives councils across Scotland the power to grant targeted rates changes to town centres.

Details of the scheme are being drawn up and will be announced in the coming days.

It follows repeated calls for a reduction in rate bills from businesses since the sudden collapse of McEwens at the end of March.

Conservative MSPs Murdo Fraser and Liz Smith have urged council leaders to use the empowerment act and “give retailers a rates break”.
