Learn more about Understanding Scottish Places Toolkit, the Place Standard Tool and the Town Centre Toolkit in this very practical half day workshop.
Experts will guide you to use, connect and develop these tools for your own place and to build an evidence base to inform strategy.
Understanding Scottish Places
Understanding Scottish Places is an online platform for towns' practitioners and communities. It is designed to help us better understand the function of the towns that we live and work in and provides the opportunity to compare and contrast towns across Scotland.
USP combines a typology of Scottish towns and an assessment of inter-relationships to find towns from across Scotland which share socio-demographic characteristics and score similarly on an independence to dependence scale. It also houses a tool designed to help users gather locally available information about towns to complement the national data presented within USP.
Place Standard Tool
Designed to support communities, public, private and third sectors, to work efficiently together, the Place Standard provides a framework to assess the quality of a place.
The tool supports collaborative working by providing a framework for structured conversations to occur, and allows participants to consider what action might be taken and to identify where their priorities lie. It enables the physical, social and environmental quality of a place to be evaluated in a structured way, but also, importantly, it aims to initiate positive conversations and collaborations between key groups and to identify areas where quality can be improved.
Town Centre Toolkit
The Town Centre Toolkit contains ideas and examples of how people and organisations can make their town centre more attractive, more active, and more accessible. It should be used as a source of inspiration rather than a set of recommendations.
Securing investment to improve town centres is difficult as public sector budgets are tighter than ever. Many of the ideas in this toolkit demonstrate how worthwhile improvements can be made through more effective use of existing assets and resources, and by better co-ordination and organisation, to make Scotland’s town centres better places.
