Promoting Healthy Placemaking
Planning, at all levels, can play a crucial role in creating environments that enhance people’s health & wellbeing, but collaborative & inclusive processes for cross-sector cooperation are required to produce new ways to integrate planning & health. Janet Askew, RTPI.
RTPI East of Scotland Chapter
Thursday 1st September (5.45pm-7.30pm)
Venue: Room 2G14, Dalhousie Building, University of Dundee
Dr Husam Al Waer, University of Dundee
The aim of this presentation is to understand and explore the contribution that collaborative design-led approaches to placemaking can make to enhance the well-being of individuals and communities. This is timely given the increasing use of collaborative community-based placemaking in both the UK and international settings, and the emphasis within public policy on developing resilient communities and promoting place based well-being. Using real live projects, Husam will explore the multi-dimensions of well-being focusing on the achievements through collaboration.
John Howie, NHS Health Scotland
John will reinforce the critical role of planning authorities in shaping the health and well-being of populations whilst tackling inequalities. He will discuss some practical mechanisms to enable this; such as the community empowerment legislation and the range of key actions contained within the recently approved Place Standard Implementation Plan 2016/19.
Gillian Kyle, sportscotland
Gillian will focus on ‘Planning and Places for Sport’ with sportscotland – who they are, what they do and how they engage with the planning system as the national agency for sport. This will include their recently updated guidance on sportscotland’s approach to planning applications and their statutory consultee role in the development management process.
