Simplified Planning Zones (SPZs) are areas in which planning permission is given in advance for certain types of development.

They were introduced to quicken the pace of development in areas where it was most needed. New provisions were introduced in 1995 to streamline SPZ adoption procedures. Planning authorities should consider the possible advantages of such schemes in promoting economic development. (SOED Circular 18/1995: Planning and Compensation Act 1991 - Simplified Planning Zones)
